Aveng Water offers a comprehensive turnkey service for the design, construction and commissioning of permanent large-scale and movable small-scale water reclamation and desalination plants for the mining, industrial and municipal water sectors. Our consulting and contracting services specialise in process design and detailed engineering and construction of treatment plants for:

  • Mine Water Treatment (acid mine drainage) for potable water use
  • Production of Process Water for industrial use
  • Industrial Effluent Treatment
  • Seawater Desalination for potable water use

Our solutions are based on the most appropriate technology for each individual application, be it an established technology, or our own proprietary in-house developed and highly effective HiPROTM (High Recovery Precipitation Reverse Osmosis) process which has been customised for mining applications.  This means that Aveng Water is able to deliver tailored reliable alternative water supplies for municipal and industrial projects of any scale.

The successful application of HiPRO™ was demonstrated at the eMalahleni Water Reclamation Plant (Anglo American Thermal Coal and BHP Billiton) and the Optimum Coal Water Reclamation Plant. We currently treat over 45 million litres of polluted water each day and produce drinking water of the highest SANS standard for the nearby municipalities. The HiPRO™ process has received prestigious accolades, such as the Technology Top 100 Achiever Award in 2012 and the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry Blue Drop Award in 2011.

Applying membrane technology further to desalination of sea water, Aveng Water has designed and constructed southern Africa’s largest seawater desalination plant. The Erongo Desalination Plant located in Namibia produces 20 million cubic metres of potable water a year.

Currently membrane technologies are leading the water treatment industry innovation. Aveng Water has been using membrane technology to develop bespoke water treatment designs for the last 15 years and therefore has extensive experience and expertise in the field. Membrane technologies that have been employed in the past projects include:

  • Microfiltration (MF) – to separate millimetre sized particles from solutions.
  • Ultrafiltration (UF) – to achieve separation of small particles and organisms such as bacteria and viruses from a solution.
  • Nanofiltration (NF) - to remove particles and large ions in the nanometre range
  • Electro Dialysis Reversal (EDR) is an electrically driven ion exchange membrane process used to desalt concentrated solutions.
  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a high pressure driven membrane process used for separating water molecules from other ions in solution, particularly sodium and chloride.

This extensive experience in the membrane field led to our in-house development of the HiPROTM technology.  HiPRO has been developed and commercialised for acid mine drainage within coal mines. This TM technology has been shown to be appropriate and effective at numerous mine water sites, and is suitable for all high sulphate containing waste waters.

HiPROTM process facts:

  • To date the only large scale commercially applied Acid Mine Water treatment process in South Africa
  • Produces highest quality drinking water to the SANS highest standard
  • Very high water recovery, usually in excess of 98% fresh water recovery
  • Lower capital and operating costs than other available technologies
  • Elimination of high-cost evaporation and crystalliser plants

These challenging projects have allowed the company to make a positive contribution to limiting the negative impact of polluted industrial water on the environment. The recovery of clean drinking water from used or polluted water ensures that large volumes of polluted water are removed from the environment, transformed into usable resources again and the small final waste streams can be safely managed.  The once polluting and hazardous problem is transformed into a highly desirable resource!
